It is the mission of the South Dakota Accident Records program to collect, analyze, and report all public roadway crash data and to provide that information for engineering improvements of roadways, education of safe driving practices, enforcement of state and local traffic laws throughout South Dakota. The Accident Records program also provides traffic crash reports upon request.
The Accident Records Office receives and processes Motor Vehicle Traffic Accidents (MVTA) as defined in South Dakota Codified Laws SDCL 32-34-7, 32-34-10 and provides copies as defined in SDCL 32-34-13.
A computer database is generated during the processing of the MVTA. This database is used to provide statistics necessary to identify problems, assist in design of countermeasures and the evaluation of applied countermeasures to promote safe highways in South Dakota.
