Recruit Class 52 -- Week 5

Monday – Wednesday, April 2, 2012 – April 4, 2012

Recruit class 52 spent three days in the field this week.  Ten recruits were stationed at the four port of entry weigh stations (Tilford, Sioux Falls, Sisseton, and Jefferson).  They received in depth training on conducting inspections, determining overweight trucks, issuing permits, and issuing citations.  The three recruits who came to the academy with extensive knowledge of the motor carrier field were stationed with troopers on the road at their respective duty stations (Rapid City, Pierre, and Sioux Falls).  On Wednesday afternoon, Class 52 traveled back to the academy to finish out the week.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Recruit Class 52 started the day with thorough room inspections conducted by Sergeant Brown.  Following inspections, the recruits met with Lieutenant Broers and Sergeant Brown in the classroom to review motor carrier laws.  They reviewed the formulas that are used to determine legal weight on axles and size limitations on various vehicle configurations.  They also discussed various rules and regulations pertaining to log books and vehicle permit requirements.  After supper, Class 52 met with Troopers Kvistad, Kurtz, and Eberhart to take a short four-mile run while reviewing traffic codes.  They made various stops along the way incorporating sprints, push-ups, and flutter kicks.
