Message from Colonel Craig Price, Superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol

From the breathtaking Black Hills, the rugged Badlands, the mighty Missouri River and the cities and towns spread across  eastern South Dakota. Those are just a few of the reasons more than 800,000 people choose to live here and over 3 million visit each year. I believe the South Dakota Highway Patrol has a duty to make sure each of those people, whether resident or visitor, is safe while in our state.

The Highway Patrol recognizes our responsibility to provide the safest traveling experience possible for each of you. We do that through educational programs that promote public safety and encourage safe driving behaviors, helping travelers in trouble on the highways, and through our enforcement efforts designed to protect all motorists.

Our education and enforcement efforts are incomplete without our partnerships.  While the Highway Patrol is a statewide law enforcement agency, our strength lies with the cooperative partnerships we have with local law enforcement to help serve the public’s needs.  You, the motoring public are also our partner, responsible for practicing safe travel behaviors on every trip.  We’re all in this together.

Please, as you travel through our state, buckle up, observe posted speed limits and don’t drink and drive.
