Motor Carrier Services comprises District Four of the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Four permanent Ports Of Entry on the interstate system provide carriers entering South Dakota with permit availability and information necessary to travel through the State. The Ports ensure that the carrier’s paperwork, permits and necessary documents are in order. They also provide educational information to the public concerning motor carrier issues.
Another component of the District consists of the use of mobile scale teams. The mobile teams set up in vans and are responsible for roadside inspections. They inspect commercial vehicles traveling on all roads within the state. Each team consists of two inspectors that work together in a dedicated effort to guarantee the commercial vehicles using the State’s roads are safe. Port inspectors also provide educational information to the public concerning motor carrier issues.
Motor Carrier Officers (MCO) are certified law enforcement officers that focus their efforts on commercial motor vehicles. They provide support to the mobile teams and ports of entry in the area of motor carrier inspection. They travel the roadways conducting random roadside inspections of motor carriers utilizing the roads. They also provide educational information to the public concerning motor carrier issues.
