Homeland Security

The National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) replaces the color codes of the Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS).
The new alert system is currently in a 90 day implementation period that began on January 27, 2011 – until the end of the
implementation period, the existing HSAS will remain in effect. NTAS will more effectively communicate information about
terrorist threats by providing timely, detailed information to the public, government agencies, first responders,
airports and other transportation hubs, and the private sector.

Our purpose is to lead the effort in keeping South Dakota free from any acts of terrorism. We do this by:
The National Strategy for Homeland Security and the Homeland Security Act of 2002 served to mobilize and organize our nation to secure the homeland from terrorist attacks. This exceedingly complex mission requires a focused effort from our entire society if we are to be successful. To this end, the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security was to provide the unifying core for the vast national network of organizations and institutions involved in efforts to secure our nation. The South Dakota Office of Homeland Security was established in 2003.
